The Strife of Tongues

Sinopsis del Libro

Libro The Strife of Tongues

Fray Luis de Len (1527-91) is known chiefly as the author of some of the finest poetry of the Spanish Golden Age, but he also wrote important prose works in both Latin and Spanish, and produced eloquent translations into Spanish of biblical and classical texts. He spent five years imprisoned in solitary confinement by the Spanish Inquisition, fighting to clear himself of a series of accusations against his views on the Bible. Acquitted on all counts, he returned to teach at the University of Salamanca. This book examines the controversies in which Fray Luis was caught up, and investigates the complex influences upon his writings of his prison experiences, his indebtedness to Judaism, his interests as a linguist, and his work as a biblical scholar and theologian. Colin Thompson looks afresh at Fray Luis's most famous poems and prose works, and explores his understanding of language as a means of enabling God to speak to humanity and humanity to rise to God.

Although the three authors studied, Ana Maria Matute, Carmen Martin Gaite, and Esther Tusquets, are sophisticated intellectuals, they have chosen fairy tales and texts from other marginalized genres originally for female consumption (such as the novela rosa and the Hollywood women's picture) as the major intertexts in their novels for adults as well as in their fictions for children. Against the backdrop feminist theory and recent critical studies of fairy tales and children's literature, Solino studies the works of these authors as "gendered texts." Solino's book opens with a chapter that...

Engaños deste siglo y historia sucedida en nuestros tiempos 1615

Libro Engaños deste siglo y historia sucedida en nuestros tiempos 1615

This novel is unique in the time period. Written in Spanish, by a French author, and published in Paris, the title (Deceits of this World) relates to a well-established genre wherein literature and morality were intertwined. Loubayssin writes with irony and wit. It is delicately erotic, a feature that cannot be found in its Spanish counterparts, due to the repressive censorship in Spain at that time. - In Spanish.
