Como una rueda La ciudad de Babel es la noria, que representa muchas cosas: la luz, la sombra y el eterno retorno, como lo pensó Nietzsche y, mi héroe, o mejor, mi antihéroe, Emiliano Isaías Gamboa, una brizna insignificante en el engranaje de esa máquina, que prefigura el tiempo con sus fantasmas y sus ilusiones de un mundo que simboliza el paraíso y el infierno terrenal de una época histórica que, curiosamente, parece haber sido borrada del mapa mental junto con sus habitantes.

La consideración de América Latina como constituyendo una región de significaciones históricas y culturales comunes, así como la articulación de lo heterogéneo en una estructura global que ha ido integrando históricamente áreas, ha sido desde el comienzo de este trabajo una hipótesis común. En virtud de esta hipótesis hemos hecho presente aquí la expresión de la literatura brasileña a través de la colaboración de sus investigadores, junto a la de Hispanoamérica y la del Caribe, en una perspectiva histórica de la construcción del discurso literario y cultural del continente.

Fray Luis de Len (1527-91) is known chiefly as the author of some of the finest poetry of the Spanish Golden Age, but he also wrote important prose works in both Latin and Spanish, and produced eloquent translations into Spanish of biblical and classical texts.
