William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) nació en Manchester, y desde muy joven se introdujo en los círculos literarios londinenses de la mano del editor John Ebers, con cuya hija se casó. En 1834 publicó una novela, Rookwood, que le reportó un enorme éxito y dio origen a la leyenda popular del salteador justiciero Dick Turpin.
