Con el título "el arte industrial tardorromano", Aloïs Riegl abordó uno de los periodos más controvertidos de la historia del arte, un periodo considerado durante mucho tiempo como decadencia y falta de capacidad creadora. Riegl mostró de forma rigurosa que el arte tardorromano no es ni una prolongación residual ni un apéndice redundante en el arte romano. Para ello estudió la arquitectura, la escultura, la pintura y el arte industrial del periodo, redactando un texto ya clásico en el transcurso de la historia del arte y en su formación como disciplina científica.
