De los toltecas ancestrales hasta los aztecas, la mayoría de los historiadores dejaban casi en blanco cinco largos siglos (del VIII al XIII) que poco a poco empiezan a ser ocupados por la hegemonía de Culhuacán, sitio al pie del Cerro de la Estrella, en el valle de México. Las excavaciones realizadas por la autora en aquel lugar entre 1958 y 1962 llenan ese hiato e iluminan el papel central de la cultura culhua.
