Los autores realizan un recorrido por la historia de San Luis Potosí desde el siglo XVI, cuando se convirtió en la ruta de la plata, del comercio y de la evangelización; caminos de la guerra y la paz que recorrió el capitán mestizo Miguel Caldera, quien fundó hacia 1592 la población de San Luis Potosí; territorio de contrastes, con sus auges mineros y la proliferación de sus haciendas; territorio donde la tradición católica se entrelazó con una tradición liberal de las que surgieron precursores que durante el siglo XX señalaron nuevos horizontes para la entidad y el país.
