William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) nació en Manchester, y desde muy joven se introdujo en los círculos literarios londinenses de la mano del editor John Ebers, con cuya hija se casó. En 1834 publicó una novela, Rookwood, que le reportó un enorme éxito y dio origen a la leyenda popular del salteador justiciero Dick Turpin. Ya dedicado de lleno a la literatura, Ainsworth escribió en los siguientes cuarenta años cerca de cuarenta novelas, entre las que destacan Jack Sheppard (1839), The Tower of London (1840), Windsor Castle (1843), The Lancashire Witches (1849) y Auriol (1850)....
