Bernal Díaz del Castillo nos ha dejado lo que muchos consideran es el mejor relato de la conquista de México. Su relación personal con los eventos narrados en su historia, dota a Díaz de la suficiente autoridad para refutar a otros autores de obras semejantes. Además del recuento de las batallas en las que participó, el autor ha incluido descripciones detalladas de los jardines botánicos, del mercado de Tlaltelolco y del centro de la capital azteca; así como de los sacrificios humanos en el gran templo de la pirámide de Cholula.
