Mientras organiza su biblioteca, Juanjo descubre una estampa con la imagen del Cristo de la Buena Muerte y Ánimas, obra del insigne escultor granadino Pedro de Mena. Tras el hallazgo se oculta la historia de su propia familia, emigrada desde Priego de Córdoba hasta Málaga. Esta novela narra los esfuerzos del heredero de un vasto imperio metalúrgico por cumplir una promesa. La historia confluye con el costumbrismo de la otra vertiente del libro y conduce hasta la clave fundamental que se oculta tras la piedra número siete.
