La intención de Weckmann en este material es aclarar el concepto erróneo de que Brasil surgió ya en plena Edad Moderna, ya que al hacer una acuciosa investigación sobre la herencia medieval de México, no concibe que el Brasil constituya excepción a la tendencia general que apunta en la historia latinoamericana.

¿Cómo llamar al siglo XX? El siglo de las guerras mundiales, de la descolonización, de la decadencia de Europa como centro del mundo, el siglo de la conquista del espacio, de la globalización, de las potencias emergentes, el siglo de la explosión demográfica, de la electrónica y la informática, de la revolución genética... Pero no nos convence ninguno de esos nombres, pues no logran definirlo plenamente. Podemos aquí asomarnos a ese complicadísimo siglo XX contemplando el panorama que nos muestra José Luis Comellas, y que nos ayudará a comprender mejor nuestro propio tiempo.
