Ricardo Palma comenzó a publicar sus Tradiciones en 1860. Sin embargo, las Tradiciones en salsa verde y otros textos, al parecer manuscritas desde 1901 y transcritas en 1904, no fueron escritas para ser publicadas. En razón de esto último, el autor solicitaba a su amigo Carlos Basadre la mayor discreción pues temía que su libro cayese en las manos de "gente mojigata, que se escandaliza no con las acciones malas sino con las palabras crudas".
