When flying an airplane was no more than a reckless act, Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly cross the Atlantic and the Pacific alone. Besides her exploits as a pilot, she wrote three books and many articles reporting on her trips, and become one of the primary promoters of aviation. Her last adventure was to fly around the world. Before arriving at the second-to-last phase of her itinerary, a storm ended her life and that of her copilot, Frederick J. Noonan.
