The first in a series of three novels based upon actual episodes in Lord Byron’s life, this engrossing tale is full of ambition, seduction, and historical legacy. Studious young Eliza Esmond is overjoyed when she meets a man whom she believes to be Lord Byron and he begins to pursue her. What she is unaware of is that this man is actually John Polidori, Byron’s former personal doctor who is also, however, the true author of the latest success credited to Byron: the story “The Vampyre,” envisioned during the same summer gathering of intellectuals in 1816 during which Mary Shelley’s idea for Frankenstein was born. Intricately weaving fiction with historical fact, this book debates who is more of an imposter, John Polidori or Lord Byron.
